Folic acid and its importance

Pregnancy is an important stage in every woman’s life. But did you know that most of the vital parts such as the brain and spinal chord are formed much before the mother realizes her pregnancy? Folates or folic acid, as it is commonly known, is very important for the proper development of the neural tube. This neural tube later develops into brain and the spinal chord. According to experts, the neural tube forms with 15 days of conception.

In simple terms, folic acid is known as vitamin B9. It found abundantly in green leafy vegetables, fortified cereal, spinach, lettuces, oranges etc. During pregnancy a woman requires about 600 µg of folic acid and while breast feeding about 500 µg.

If you are planning a pregnancy, then consult your gynecologist and get the requisite vitamin supplements for a healthy baby. Happy parenting!
